Wooden blinds are wonderful. They add a natural, organic touch to any space, making it feel richer and warmer. But when it comes to caring for them, you may need to take some extra steps to ensure they look great well into the future.

Step One: Is it Real Wood?

The first thing you need to know is if your wooden blinds really are made from wood. This might seem like something you would know, but unless you purchased the blinds yourself, it is difficult to be certain. There are many imitation wood blinds on the market that will easily fool the eye, so take time to inspect your blinds so you can be certain that are made from real wood.

Step Two: Complete a Quick Dusting

With luck, this will be all the cleaning that you need to do. And if there is more cleaning that needs to be done, removing the dust on top will make it easier to see. When dusting, you should move from one side to the other, either left to right or right to left, so that the dust is not simply resettling on the surrounding blinds. And always start at the top of each blind and move to the bottom.

As for the products used to dust, this is mostly up to you. You do not need to use any liquid at this stage; just a dry-dusting product, such as a paper towel, old sock, or a Swiffer cloth. If you wish to use your vacuum, take care to only use the soft-bristle attachment, as the rougher brushes can cause damage to the blinds.

Step Three: Use Wood Cleaner to Target More Difficult Spots

Is there a spot where dirt or dust is really sticking to the blinds? Then it’s time to get out the wood cleaner. You do not want to oversaturate the blind, so either spray the blinds as a whole from a distance or simply spray some onto a cloth. From there, you can clean all of the blinds or simply spot clean as needed.

Step Four: Use Polish for a Beautiful Shine

This step is optional, but if you want to really bring out the shine in your blinds, this is a great step to add to your vertical wood blind care. Simply follow the instructions on the polish of your choice and all should be well. Be careful not to use too much, and do not complete this step each time you clean the blinds.

Step Five: Use a Dryer Sheet to Repel Dust

Want to get more time between cleanings? Run a dryer sheet over your blinds before you finish. This reduces the natural buildup of static electricity that tends to attract dirt. You will find that you can go quite a bit longer before dusting again, and you can use this same trick on any wooden surface in your home. As an alternative, you can dip a rag in fabric softener and use it instead of dryer sheets.
